Raeburn supports students careers services
A vital resource for Aberdeen students will re-launch with a new look next week.
Following a move of premises over the summer, the University of Aberdeen Careers Service has been revamped with a new Careers Service Handbook and website reflecting the facility’s forward thinking approach to helping students find their career direction.
The re-branding of the service has been supported by a £10,000 donation from Raeburn Group Limited - Scotland’s specialist recruitment agency.
The Careers Service will be officially re-launched on Tuesday 28 October, with an event to be held on the 2nd floor of The Hub on the University’s King’s College Campus - where the Careers Service is now located having moved from its previous home in College Bounds.
The event, which takes place from 1 – 2 pm, will offer students the opportunity to discover more about the tools, facilities and advice provided by the Careers Service.
Free pizza will be available at the event with attendees also given the opportunity to enter a free prize draw to be in with a chance to win a Nintendo Wii.
The event has been designed to help students understand how the Careers Service can be of benefit to them throughout the various stages of their academic career as Peter Fantom, Head of Careers Service, University of Aberdeen explains:
“The University of Aberdeen Careers Service is a vital tool for the student community. It provides them with clear advice, guidance and crucial resources to develop their skills and discover their employment or further study options to find the right career direction.
“With the move to our new premises on the top floor of The Hub, we felt it timely to revamp the branding of the Careers Service to reflect the vibrant and hands on approach we take in helping students get that all important first foot on the career ladder.
“Whether you are a first year student looking for part time work, or in your final year of studies looking ahead to your prospects for the future, the Career Service can provide the essential support, services and information required.
“From one to one consultations with careers advisers, to reference books and multimedia facilities, the service offers a range of tools which can help students plan their career or apply for jobs, work experience or internships. Useful information on further study, including Masters, PhDs and funding information, and help for international students is also an integral part of what the service offers.”
Representatives from Raeburn will also be on hand at the event, to explain how they can help students get that vital first foot on the career ladder, or support their studies through part time employment.
Dianne McBain - Raeburn’s Director of Operations said: “The Aberdeen student community is a hugely valuable asset for employers in the city and shire – not to mention clients with internationally-based operations and opportunities. Raeburn have a history of supporting students throughout all stages of their career development from part-time work to help fund their studies, industrial placements to enrich their learning, to identifying opportunities suited to graduates who are ready to take that next step up the career ladder.”
“We are delighted to offer support to the University of Aberdeen’s Career Service and play a part in offering advice to students on how they can best enhance their career prospects and pursue their professional aspirations. After all, those who join today’s graduate schemes may well become tomorrow’s leaders in industry. What an accolade to hear that this achievement was helped by Raeburn!”

North-east recruitment specialists Raeburn moving to larger premises as business booms
RECRUITMENT specialist Raeburn Group moves into new offices on Monday, December 10, 2007.
The company, one of the leading independent recruitment agencies in Scotland, has been based at 220 Union Street since 1990. However, due to continuing expansion and with the number of personnel it retains approaching 500, Raeburn’s directors recognised it was time to relocate.
The decision was taken to move to an entirely refurbished, open-plan office on the top floor of Ruby House, in Aberdeen’s Ruby Lane. The city-centre building is also home to HM Revenue and Customs.
Raeburn operations director Dianne McBain said: “The new open-plan office allows us to accommodate the additional staff we are recruiting to further improve the levels of service to clients and candidates looking for new work opportunities.”
Raeburn currently employs 40 staff including account managers and consultants. It is anticipated a further 10 full-time jobs will be created at Raeburn headquarters to service increasing demand for candidates in what the company considers to be a still buoyant North-east jobs market.
Raeburn engineering director Susan Duguid said there continued to be strong demand for skilled candidates from employers.
“We have been planning the move to Ruby House for some time and it could not have come at a better time for us as we have experienced unprecedented demand for candidates. We would normally expect a downturn in the market for engineers in the run up to Christmas but in 2007 that has not been the case and we have experienced the busiest November we have had in many years, particularly for full-time positions.”
She added: “Our clients are telling us that there is a candidate shortage in the North-east – there is certainly not a lack of jobs available and there is a wealth of vacancies in the engineering sector.”
“The most recent Bank of Scotland labour market report published in November confirms what we have been hearing from our clients: engineering is still the most in-demand category of staff for both permanent and temporary/contract employees with Aberdeen registering the strongest growth in permanent salaries.”
Qualified, and perhaps more importantly, experienced engineers are always likely to be in demand in the North-east of Scotland because of the oil and gas industry. However, Raeburn are also closely involved in the nursing and care sector, which is also experiencing a surge in demand for healthcare professionals in both the NHS and private care.
Raeburn nursing and care director Susan Bogle said the company’s position as the only recruitment company in the country which has an established and government-approved contract with NHS Scotland to provide registered NHS nursing personnel, meant the company was actively seeking nurses to fill vacancies for registered general nurses, care home staff, occupational health professionals and support workers.
Susan Bogle added: “It may seem obvious but we always plan for a surge in demand for staff during the winter months because more people tend to fall ill at this time of year but it can still be challenging to find the right caliber of staff. With good staff at a premium, candidates are well placed to secure industry leading rates of pay in the run up to Christmas.”
“By ensuring our candidates are offered attractive packages we gain their confidence and establish a close working relationship that has benefits for everyone involved in the recruitment process,” added Susan Bogle.

Immigration Status Report - Opening New Doors
A wise recruitment strategy is a global recruitment strategy. With over 25 years' experience providing recruitment solutions to the commercial, engineering and health sectors, Raeburn understand the importance of providing employers with the widest and most diverse pool of highly skilled candidates possible.
Immigration Status ReportAs shortages of highly skilled staff become more acute, employers in the UK are increasingly looking abroad to fill growing demands for skilled workers.
To assist in this regard, UK immigration specialists DavidsonMorris Solicitors have created the Immigration Status Report (ISR). The ISR is a service that helps facilitate recruitment from skilled labour markets around the world by providing a detailed assessment, explanation, and verification of an overseas candidate’s eligibility to work and live in the UK.
Benefits
UK immigration law is complex, restrictive and is currently undergoing major changes. Knowing the best route into the UK is often difficult and, as a result, many excellent candidates are overlooked. The ISR, through a detailed assessment of a candidate’s qualifications, skills, salary, personal circumstances etc, produces a comprehensive report detailing all the potential immigration routes into the UK, bespoke to that individual.
What is included in an ISR?· an ISR Certificate which confirms which visa categories the candidate is eligible for. The ISR can be attached to a candidate’s CV which assists the HR manager when the candidate's CV lands on their desk;
· a report detailing the visa categories and how to obtain the visa;
· NARIC verification of a candidate’s qualifications showing how they compare to UK standards. NARIC is the official international qualifications comparison service recognised by the British government and companies in the UK;
· information about how to apply for visa extensions and settlement in the UK
· if applicable, the report will include detailed information about how a candidate's family or dependents can immigrate to the UK
· optional summary reports detailing a candidate’s eligibility for American, Australian and Canadian immigration routes
This up-front assessment ensures that:· the potential employer can be comfortable knowing that the candidate under consideration has legal routes into the UK
· these routes will be detailed and can be used to guide employers ensuring that the confusion over the most appropriate routes into the UK is removed
· qualifications gained at overseas institutions are of equivalent UK degree standard - often a determining factor in the immigration process
· professional references are available to be taken by both the employer and immigration officials
· the employer and candidate are aware of the documents required and steps to be taken to ensure a successful immigration application
· as required, assistance from DavidsonMorris Solicitors to secure the appropriate visa
The ISR team is always happy to assist the employer’s HR department by processing the candidates’ immigration application.- 30 May 2007
